Lucian of Antioch (312)
Knowledgeable Defender
Thinker, scholar and founder of an important theological school at Antioch, Lucian was one of many who fell into the hands of the Roman authorities under Emperor Diocletian. This emperor, who was notorious in Church history as a persecutor of the faithful, had Lucian imprisoned for nine years. So memorable was the reign of terror inflicted on the Christians of the Roman Empire that the Coptic Church terms it the “Era of Martyrs”.
Twice during this period Lucian was interrogated by those who wanted to see him deny his faith. Yet he stood firm, being able to defend himself using his masterful knowledge of Christianity. Since he refused to renounce his Saviour, he was put to death, either by starvation or the sword.
We may note in passing that He [Jesus] was never regarded as a mere moral teacher. He did not produce that effect on any of the people who actually met Him.
