Egyptian Christians (2010)
Triple Attack
Six Christians and a security guard were killed when three gunmen stormed a worship service at a church in the city of Nag Hammadi, Upper Egypt, on 6 January 2010, the eve of the Eastern Christmas Day, which is 7 January. This attack followed threats to the church minister, apparently because of his outspoken criticism of earlier violence against Christians in the neighbouring town of Farshout by a Muslim mob, and requests for compensation for those who had lost property and businesses there. During the violence on 21 November, ten pharmacies and 55 Christian-owned shops and businesses had been looted, vandalised and burnt; cars were attacked and Christian families thrown out of their homes, and at least seven Christians were injured.
Following the church shooting on 6 January, there were further assaults against the Christian community in the nearby town of Baghoura just two days later. A Muslim mob armed with swords and gas cylinders looted and torched homes, shops and cars belonging to local Christians. One woman died when her home was set alight.
