Ugandan Christians (1997)
Targeted at an Open-air Prayer Meeting

Six Christians died in January 1997 when militants attacked a church in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. They were among 500 Christians who were taking part in an open-air prayer meeting in a suburb called Bwaise. Three of the victims died instantly, while the other three died in hospital. Around 40 other people were injured. The killers were unidentified, and no-one claimed responsibility, although the police suspected Islamic militants. Kampala newspapers reported that several preachers at the prayer meeting had criticised the Quran, which had angered Muslims. Traditionally Muslims and Christians in Uganda have lived together harmoniously.

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, have mercy upon the Muslims and all others who are strangers to thy redeeming love; and grant that thy Church may so powerfully exhibit to them the saving truth of the gospel that they may be brought to confess thy Son Jesus Christ as their Prophet, Priest and King, and to share with us the fellowship of the Spirit, to the glory of thy name; through the merits of the death and passion of the same thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
