The wicked are waiting to destroy me, but I will ponder your statutes. Psalm 119:95
Peter of Alexandria (311)
Final Martyr
Peter was the last Christian to be put to death by the authorities in Alexandria during the final and most severe wave of persecution that took place under a succession of brutal Roman Emperors. As such he is referred to as the “Seal and Compliment of the Persecution” by the Coptic Church.
He was the bishop of Alexandria for 12 years, a role that he carried out in an exemplary manner. Church historian Eusebius described him as “an inspired Christian teacher … a worthy example of a bishop, both for the goodness of his life and his knowledge of the Scriptures”. Peter was arrested suddenly and unexpectedly in November 311, and then beheaded.
O God the Great and the Eternal, who formed man in incorruption, and death which entered into the world by the envy of the devil, you have destroyed, by the life-giving manifestation of your Only-Begotten Son, our Lord God and Saviour Jesus Christ. You have filled the earth with the heavenly peace, by which the hosts of angels glorify you saying, “Glory to God in the highest, peace on earth and good will toward men”.
