Stabbed at Home
On 9 June 2003 Esther was stabbed to death in her own home on her return from engaging in street evangelism. As she walked the short distance to her home in Numan, a Christian-majority town in north-eastern Nigeria, a man named Mohammed Salisu followed close behind. Esther’s children saw him emerge from the house carrying a knife covered with blood.
Esther’s murder triggered a lengthy period of sectarian unrest that resulted in the deaths of three other Christians. Christians are in the minority in the northern part of Nigeria and face the constant threat of persecution.
