The arrogant mock me unmercifully, but I do not turn from your law.
Psalm 119:51
Peregrinus (c. 261)
Preached Against Idolatry
Peregrinus was the first bishop of Auxerre, France, and his preaching saw most of the city’s inhabitants convert to Christianity. Furthermore, he built a church and began to evangelise the surrounding area. When a new temple to Roman god Jupiter was being dedicated at Interanum, south-west of Auxerre, Peregrinus went to the town and appealed to the people to give up their idolatry. He was seized and brought before the governor. He was tortured and then beheaded in c. 261.
Thanks to you, Lord Jesus Christ,
for all the benefits which you have won for us,
for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us.
O most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother,
may we know you more clearly,
love you more dearly,
and follow you more nearly,
day by day.
Richard of Chichester (1197-1253)
