In the way of righteousness there is life; along that path is immortality. Proverbs 12:28
Ròmulo Sauñe (1992)
The Righteous Path
Quechua Indian Christians became targets of the violent opposition group, the Shining Path, in their fight against the Peruvian government. The rebels wanted the Quechuas to back their cause but the Christians were opposed to their violent tactics.
Ròmulo, who was well-known for his ministry to the Quechua pastors, became a particular target because of his great influence among the tribe. In September 1992, while returning to the city of Ayacucho, Ròmulo and his companions were stopped at a roadblock set up by the Shining Path in the Andes of Peru. As soon as the truck stopped, the rebels opened fire and Ròmulo died from bullet wounds on the spot. His three nephews were killed alongside him.
Ròmulo’s murder can also be seen as part of a campaign against the Sauñe family which started when Ròmulo’s grandfather – one of the first Quechua converts – was savagely killed by the Shining Path when he defended his faith in front of them.
Lord God, the refuge and strength of your people in every hour of need; sustain all who suffer for their allegiance to the faith of Christ. Give them courage and patience to endure to the end; that by their example and witness they may win others to the service of him who suffered for all mankind, our Saviour Jesus Christ.
